Lebanese, American Flags Torched at Dearborn Heights Home

Homeowner says that his home has been targeted by an arsonist twice in two weeks, but he still plans to fly flags.

A Dearborn Heights man says his home has been targeted again by an arsonist who burned Lebanese and American flags flying outside, and this time it could have cost him and his family their lives.

The homeowner, who declined to be identified, told WJBK-TV, Channel 2, that he awoke to a noise inside his home in the 26000 block of Clairview about 2 a.m. Sunday morning. He thought it was a daughter coming home from work and he called her.

When she didn’t answer, he investigated and discovered a man inside his kitchen holding a flaming piece of wood he was allegedly using to torch the kitchen. When confronted, the intruder ran out of the house, jumped a fence and disappeared.

The man’s wife and three of their children were sleeping inside the house at the time of the intrusion. “He could have killed my family, you know. He could have killed me,” the homeowner said. “He could have set the stove on fire and blown up the house.”

The man told the TV station that a Lebanese flag was burned at his house two weeks ago.

“I’m going to put back the American flag and the Lebanese flag,” he said. “... That’s my house and I can do what I want.”

Dearborn Heights police have been notified of the flag burnings and are investigating, according to the report.
