Major I-94 Project In Wayne County Begins This Month: What To Know

Road crews will restore and rebuild nearly 13 miles of the freeway in Wayne County over the next three years.

WAYNE COUNTY, MI — A major Interstate 94 project from Romulus to Dearborn is expected to begin later this month, according to road officials.

Road crews will restore and rebuild nearly 13 miles of the freeway from Interstate 275 to west of US-12 (Michigan Avenue) over the next three years, according to road officials.

  • Interstate 94 from Wayne Road to Middlebelt Road
  • Interstate 94 from MiddleBelt Road to Beech Daly Road
  • Interstate 94 from Beech Daly Road to Pelham Road
  • Interstate 94 from Pelham Road to Oakwood Boulevard
  • Interstate 94/Schaefer Road Interchange (Ford Rouge Plant Gate 10 Entrance)

Crews will begin preparing the shoulders and medians for traffic shifts necessary to reconstruct the future realignment of the freeway sometime later this month.

The freeway will stay open during the project, but lanes will be restricted to just one or two lanes. Drivers should also expect routine traffic shifts and ramp closures.

The overall project will cost $353 million and will include rebuilding and realigning the roadway, concrete repairs/patching, bridge work, ramp work, lighting improvements, cable barrier work, improved drainage and Intelligent Transportation System upgrades. They will also build an entirely new interchange at Ecorse Road.

Road officials are holding two public meetings to learn more about the project. Those dates are:

  • Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1–3 p.m. at the Allen Park DPS Conference Room on 24000 W. Outer Drive
  • Wednesday, Feb. 11, 4–6 p.m. at Taylor City Hall on 23555 Goddard Road in Taylor
