MI Supreme Court Will Again Hear Dearborn Hts. Shooting Case

Theodore Wafer's lawyers are arguing his double-conviction of second-degree murder and manslaughter was unfair.

DEARBORN HEIGHTS, MI — The Michigan Supreme Court will again hear arguments Thursday for a Dearborn Heights man who was convicted for killing a Detroit woman in 2013.

Theodore Wafer is arguing his 17-year sentence for second-degree murder and manslaughter is unfair because the manslaughter charge enhanced his sentence for the same crime. In other words, Wafer's lawyers are attempting to throw out the manslaughter conviction.

Wafer, now 62, was convicted in 2014 for the death of 19-year-old Renisha McBride. Wafer shot and killed McBride with a shotgun on his front porch on Nov. 2, 2013, while she was seeking help after she crash her car. McBride had been drinking that night.

The crash occurred less than a mile away from Wafer's home on West Outer Drive and Dolphin near Warren Avenue.

Wafer argued he feared for his life when he heard loud banging on his door in the early morning.
