MLK Day March Celebrates #TheRealDearborn

Students at local high schools are tired of the negative images of their city, so they plan to march on Jan. 18 to show diversity, unity.

DEARBORN, MI – Frustrated with negative images of Dearborn often portrayed in the media, students at four area high schools are organizing a march — called #TheRealDearborn Peace March — on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 18.

The march celebrates Dearborn’s historic diversity, rich culture and united community, according to a press release. About 40 percent of the residents of Dearborn are Arab-Americans.

Participating will be students from Dearborn, Edsel Ford, Fordson, and Divine Child High School. They’ve invited community members to join them in the march, which starts at noon on Jan. 18 at Greenfield Road and Michigan Avenue and then proceeds three-fourths of a mile west on Michigan Avenue to the city of Dearborn administration building at 16901 Michigan Ave.

The students’ aim in the hour-long event is to draw hundreds of community members, both young and old. Dearborn Public Schools Superintendent Glenn Maleyko, Dearborn Mayor John B. O’Reilly Jr. and other prominent members of the community plan to take part.

“When the students first mentioned the idea I supported their efforts and thought it would be an excellent way to showcase the community spirit that thrives in Dearborn,” Maleyko said in a news release.
