Overall Crime In Dearborn Down From Last Year

Dearborn Police analyzed crime across twelve different categories​, including thefts, robberies and others.

DEARBORN, MI — Year-to-date crime in Dearborn is down 10 percent from last August, according to officials citing data from the Dearborn Police Department.

Dearborn Police analyzed crime across twelve different categories, including thefts, robberies and others.

The data shows a 46 percent drop in larcenies of items stolen from vehicles, 23 percent drop in robberies, 20 percent drop in car theft and 12 percent drop in aggravated assault, as of Aug. 8, 2024.

Not all crime in Dearborn was down year-over-year, however. The data does show a slight 2 percent increase in larcenies and a 24 percent spike in minor retail fraud (largely from shoplifting incidents at the Walmart located in Dearborn), officials said.

Car crashes stayed largely the same year-over-over, with 64 more crashes than last year (2264-2200), officials said.

Police also respond to a 5 percent increase in mental health calls year-over-year, officials said.

"As Mayor and as a lifelong Dearborn resident, I am endlessly grateful for the members of the Dearborn Police Department for their tireless efforts in keeping our neighborhoods safe," Dearborn Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud said. "Under Chief Shahin’s leadership, the department has made incredible strides in building trust through successful community policing initiatives, implementing state-of-the-art technology, and prioritizing exceptional police training and staff development."

Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said the department is pleased to see their efforts have resulted in an overall crime drop over the past 12 months.

"The safety of our residents is our top priority, and we will continue our work ensuring the highest level of safety in our neighborhoods and on our streets," Shahin said. "The consistency of vehicle crashes and reckless driving incidents is staggering, and it is on all of us to improve in the coming year."
