Rouge Gateway Trail Extension Construction Begins

The parking lot at the trail head will close for the summer, but trail users can use the train station parking lot.

The public parking lot at the Rouge Gateway Trailhead off Michigan Avenue, west of Evergreen, will be closing soon for the summer.

The closing will allow for construction work to extend the trail so users can easily connect to Ford Field Park.

The long-planned addition will extend the trail near the river to the area of Morley and Brady streets. There bikers can use the existing bike lane along Brady to get to the park one block north, and walkers can traverse the sidewalk.

To do the work, construction crews will close the public parking lot behind Andiamo restaurant, 21400 Michigan Avenue.

The lot is expected to close the week of June 15, depending on weather conditions.

During the closure, bicyclists and hikers can park at the John D. Dingell Transit Center parking lot across the street. A stoplight and crosswalk are available to help them safely cross Michigan Avenue from the train station to the trailhead.

Trail users may be required to cross the grass to access the trail east of the closed lot.
