Scholarship is Music to Teen’s Ears

For sophomore Sascha Meyers, playing the flute is just one of several activities she enjoys.

But for three years going, the teen has been able to build on her musical abilities courtesy of music scholarships, the latest of which was offered to her by the Fairlane Sunrise Rotary. The $500 gift was offered to Meyers after an audition where she bested several other Dearborn and Dearborn Heights students. The scholarship is given out annually to help young musicians defray the costs of private instruction.

“It really helps with my lessons,” said Meyers, 16. “I really enjoy being able to make music when I want to.”

Meyers has many opportunities to show off her musical side as part of the Dearborn High School Marching band, and a member of the 23-member Dearborn Youth Symphony’s Flute Choir. She was accepted into the choir after an audition.

Donna Olkowski, the Dearborn Youth Symphony’s Flute Choirs conductor and Meyers’ private instructor, called the young flutist a dedicated, hard-working musician.

“She’s a talented young lady, and she’s just a joy to work with,” said Olkowski, who has been Meyers’ private instructor for many months.

As part of the flute choir, Meyers has played at several area events.

Meyers said she enjoys playing many different types of music, including the classics, as well as contemporary music. As part of the high school marching band, she has played everything from traditional marches to “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey.

As a sophomore, Meyers has time to think about her career path, but so far she’s learning towards veterinary science. A successful swimmer, Meyers more immediate concern is to earn a swimming scholarship.

Still, Meyers thinks music will always be a cherished avocation.

“I think I will always play as a hobby,” she said.
