School access

Teachers have always encouaged parents to get involved with the school, and show an interest in teaching their kids.
Can parents visit the schools during school hours, and observe the teachers in the classroom?  Is there a way to input ideas, beyond emails, into the school setting?  How do parents get feedback on how their child is doing?   Once a week?   A month?   Just via a report card?  Parents/ Teachers groups are ok, but they are subdued, removed from the teaching arena.  In the typical 4th grade classroom, are subjects taught at a pace set by the slowest student, or by a timetable.  What about the students who 'get it' and are bored out of their minds?  Why are we 34th in the world in math rankings?   Why does the rest of the world go to class year round, and we are still taking the summer off to 'harvest the crops'?  Teachers are paid an annual salary, they can work year round, without any additional cost, right?
