Serial Rape Suspect: ‘I Was Basically Kidnapped’

So far, a suspect in 35 rapes and home invasions has been arraigned on charges in five communities. The investigation is ongoing.

DEARBORN, MI — Accused serial rapist Ikeie Ranordo Smith, 32, a suspect in at least 35 sexual assaults and home invasions across eight different communities, was back in court Thursday for arraignment on a new set of charges, this time in Dearborn.

Smith, of Redford Township, was charged with two counts of first-degree home invasion in Dearborn’s 19th District Court. The charges stem from incidents on Aug. 10, 2013, and Aug. 13, 2015, according to court records.
So far, Smith has been charged in Garden City, Redford Township, Allen Park and Dearborn Heights. In all but the Dearborn cases, both criminal sexual conduct and home invasion charges were filed.

When asked in court Thursday by Judge William Hultgren if he had been in jail since his arrest last week, Smith responded, “Yes, I was basically kidnapped,” The Detroit News reports.

Hultgren ordered Smith held on two $100,000 bonds, with no 10 percent surety. On the Allen Park charges, Smith’s bond was set at $1 million.

On Monday, Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad said that three of the 35 cases police are investigating occurred in Dearborn. He did not say how many of the cases, which date back to 2011, involved rape, but said a Michigan State Police lab analysis in November linked the suspect to all of the them.

“I can’t go into the other jurisdictions’ cases, nor will I give out evidentiary information,” Haddad said Monday. “But I will tell you there are 35 cases in our region that we suspect this person is responsible for. In the city of Dearborn, we have confirmed there are three cases that involve this individual.”

In the news conference, Haddad said “this particular nightmare that has plagued our community and region for a long time is over.”

FBI behavior analysts have described Smith as “a power reassurance rapist,” that is an individual who experiences feelings of self-doubt inadequacy with women, but generally does not harm them beyond the sexual assault.

“There’s no more power he holds over the people,” Haddad said. “I can assure you he will be in jail for a long time.”

Smith’s mother, Janet Freeman, attended his initial arraignment in Garden City, but left the courtroom in tears as a police detective described her rapwhile her husband slept in another room.

“He did this and it’s inexcusable,” Freeman said, according to the report by The Detroit News. “I’m so angry at him, trust me. But I’m going to support my baby.
“My heart goes out to the victims, most of all. They didn’t deserve this. I’m not going to sugarcoat this. It is what it is. DNA doesn’t lie.”

Stick a fork in him,” she said, “he’s done.”
