Special Aug. 30 Primary Set After Death of District 11 State Rep.

Democrats will choose candidate to replace House District 11 Rep. Julie Plawecki, who died June 25 while hiking with her family in Oregon.

Dearborn Heights, MI — A special primary election will be held Aug. 30 to choose party nominations to replace House District 11 Rep. Julie Plawecki, 54, who died of an apparent heart attack while hiking with her daughters in Oregon last month.

Plawecki, a Democrat, was a first-term state representative.

“While we are still mourning the passing of Rep. Plawecki, the residents of the 11th House District need representation,” Snyder said in a news release.

The winners in both Democrat and Republican primaries will compete on the Nov. 8 general election ballot for the right to fill Plawecki’s term through the end of 2016.

Candidates for the special primary must file nomination papers by 4 p.m. on July 12.

Meanwhile, House District 11 Democratic precinct delegates will meet this week to select a candidate to replace Plawecki on the already-set Aug. 2 primary ballot.

The meeting is at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 7, at Westland City Hall, 36300 Warren Road, to select the three people who will choose a new candidate for the district. House District 11 includes Garden City, Inkster and parts of Westland, Dearborn Heights and Livonia.

Aug 2 primary ballots for House District 11 will be reprinted.

The Detroit Free Press said interested candidates have until 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, to submit letters and resumes to Jonathan Kinloch, chairman of the 13th congressional district, at jkinloch@mi13thdistrict.com. Candidates may also drop of their materials to the front desk at the AFSCME local 600 offices at 600 West Lafayette in Detroit.

Among those who have already expressed interest are former Inkster Mayor Hilliard Hampton; Inkster Councilman Jewell Jones; Rashid Baydoun, who finished second behind Plawecki in th 2014 primary; and Mohamed Ayoub, a senior planner for the city of Dearborn.

Plawecki died June 25.
