Students in school districts where 50 percent of children get free or reduced lunches eligible for program.

Wayne County, MI — Wayne County’s  Summer Food Service Program, available to families in school districts where half of the children receive free or reduced-price meals, gets under way Monday and continues through Aug. 19.

Free, nutritious lunches will be available at several sites — including parks, apartment complexes and churches — in the communities of Bellville, Dearborn, Inkster, Romulus, River Rouge, Riverview, Taylor and Wayne.

The cold lunches are served weekdays over a two-hour block during lunch and include a sandwich, fruit, juice and cookie. Wayne County expects to serve 31,000 meals as part of the program.

“This program allows Wayne County families to stretch their food dollars during these economically-challenging times and enables their children to benefit nutritionally by receiving complete, wholesome meals during the summer,” Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans said in a statement.

In addition, the program provides free meals for residents through age 26 who are determined to be mentally or physically handicapped by a state or local educational agency, or who participate in public or private nonprofit school programs for the handicapped.

“We are extremely pleased to once again support this important program for Wayne County’s young people and residents by providing nutritious meals and encouraging healthy eating habits,” Dr. Mouhanad Hammami, director of the Department of Health, Veterans and Community Wellness, said,

The Summer Food Service Program ensures that no child eligible for this program will be turned away and is operated in accordance to Federal laws and U.S. Department of Agriculture policy. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered by the Wayne County Division of Wellness Services.
