Tattered Flags to Be Burned Again on Flag Day

What should you do with a tattered flag that is no longer suitable for display? Read on to find out when and where to drop them off.

DEARBORN, MI – A dignified ceremony to burn tattered American flags is part of the city of Dearborn’s annual Flag Day commemoration ceremony to be held on Tuesday, June 14.

The ceremony, held in conjunction with the Dearborn Allied War Veterans Council, will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Ford Field Park on Cherry Hill west of Brady.

The flag disposal ceremony is in keeping with American Legion protocols for the disposal of flags that are no longer fit for public display.

Members of the public may drop off tattered flags for burning at the front kiosk of the Dearborn Administrative Center, 16901 Michigan Ave., until Monday, June 13.

The public can also drop off tattered flags at the ceremony site no later than 6 p.m. on June 14.

The Dearborn Fire Department will be on hand to ensure a safe burning environment.

June 14, 2016, will mark the 239th anniversary of the adoption of the nation’s flag by the Continental Congress in the year 1777.
