Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be observed on Monday, Jan. 18. Here's a look at what's open and closed in Dearborn.

DEARBORN, MI – The Dearborn Administrative Center, 19th District Court and city libraries will all be closed Monday, Jan. 18, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Curbside trash and recycling pickup will remain on schedule the week of Jan. 18-22, which is recycling week A in Dearborn.

The holiday marks the birthday and achievements of the slain civil rights leader. King was actually born on Jan. 15, 1929, but the holiday is celebrated on the third Monday of each year.

The campaign for a holiday in his honor began soon after his 1968 assassination, but it wasn’t until 1983 when President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law. The first official observance was in 1986, and some states resisted observing it. In 2000, it was observed for the first time by all 50 states.

In years since, the holiday has become known as a national day of service, according to The King Center.

What else do you need to know about what’s open and closed in Dearborn on MLK Day?

  • The Ford Community and Performing Arts Center, 15801 Michigan Ave., is open from 5:30 a.m. – 10 p.m., its normal schedule. However, the Senior Center will be closed.
  • The Dearborn Ice Skating Center (DISC), 14900 Ford Road, will be open during its regular hours. For more information on ice time availability, call (313) 943-4098.
  • Dearborn schools will be closed.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday, so there won’t be any mail delivery.
  • Many banks will be closed. Call ahead before you go.
  • The New York Stock Exchange will be closed.
