Women’s Health Care Classic

On June 13, 2022, Karen Wilson Smithbauer and Drs. Harris, Birkhill, Wang, Songe & Assoc., PCwill host the Women’s Health Care Classic. During the past 29 years, this event has raised more than $7 million to benefit women’s health care services at Beaumont hospitals in Dearborn, Taylor, Trenton and Wayne. In 2022, the Beaumont Health Foundation, along with the honorary committee, hope to add an additional $325,000 to those programs through the Women’s Health Care Classic.

The Women’s Health Care Classic is a two-course event with a women’s-only tournament at Dearborn Country Club and a men’s and women’s tournament at TPC Michigan. The event provides an opportunity for women and men from across southeastern Michigan to enjoy a day of golf.

Highlights of the day include breakfast, pro shop shopping experience, lunch, cocktail reception and strolling dinner. In addition, golf pro Rick Smith will be on-site at TPC Michigan providing tips for golfers and to drive a pro-shot for each foursome.

For those attending the cocktail reception and dinner at the Dearborn Country Club, Beaumont will be honoring Jan and Jerry Fitzgerald for their exceptional generosity and support of multiple health care programs impacting the community. Jan is the founding chair of this event, and Jerry is a significant leader in health care for the region.

“I have participated in the Women’s Health Care Classic for many years — both as a sponsor and a player,” said Novi resident Donald Conn, MD, president of title sponsor Drs. Harris, Birkhill, Wang, Songe & Associates, PC and honorary co-chair. “I know firsthand the vital support funds raised at this event gives to hundreds of women each year. I encourage others to join us for a fun afternoon that helps so many.”

Monies raised from this event help to finance more than 80 women’s services - from advanced medical equipment to scholarships for uninsured and underinsured women so they may receive breast care services. Specific support is given for transportation to and from appointments, wigs & head coverings, educational materials, facility renovations and updates, endowments for continuing care giver education and a nurse navigator program.

“I am a 19-year breast cancer survivor so I feel strongly about helping other women navigate through their difficult journey of breast cancer,” said Grosse Ile resident Karen Wilson Smithbauer, title sponsor and honorary co-chair. “By providing the newest technologies and equipment, we can have early detection of breast cancer with the nurse navigators providing guidance through every step of the way.”
