Yogurtopia opens East Dearborn location

The family-fun grand opening will include music, face painting, special discounts and photo opportunities with Miley the Yogurtopia mascot.

After opening its first location in December of 2010, Dearborn-based Yogurtopia spread across multiple cities and two states in less than three years. This September, the frozen yogurt retailer will double its number of locations as they open their first two franchised stores in East Dearborn and Brighton, Michigan.

“Yogurtopia began as more of a movement than a business venture,” said president and founder of Yogurtopia Sam Abbas. “We wanted to provide a fun space for the community to get together to delight in a menu of all-natural, healthy options. We’re thrilled to be able to share this experience with more communities across metro Detroit.”

The new franchise locations have been custom designed to fit the communities they serve. While each has a unique look and feel, the ingredients remain the same. The menu includes Yogurtopia’s all-natural custom blend of self-serve frozen yogurt and toppings, as well as several other in-store options such as crepes, 100% organic coffee and espresso, 100% organic smoothies and fresh baked goods.

“Every item on the menu is made with whole, healthy ingredients and delivered at an affordable price,” said Abbas. “Our frozen yogurt is packed with ten times the amount of probiotics found in other frozen yogurts; our smoothies are organic; our coffees are organic and fair-trade. We don’t carry other options because we carry only the best options.”

Yogurtopia invites the entire community to come out from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 23 to celebrate the grand opening of the new East Dearborn location, which is located at 6901 Schaefer Road. The family-fun event will include music, face painting, special discounts and photo opportunities with Miley the Yogurtopia mascot.

Dearborn Mayor O’Reilly will welcome guests with a special ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled at 4 p.m. and local celebrities will be on hand as guest baristas, and proceeds from their sales will benefit Hope Now for ALS. In addition, Yogurtopia is offering a special buy one get one free deal for all frozen yogurt orders during the event.

The franchise location is owned by Abir Mehanna and husband Haitham Mehanna of Dearborn Heights, Michigan. The family frequently visited the flagship Yogurtopia location in West Dearborn, and is thrilled to be opening their own.

“We are so excited to be joining the Yogurtopia family,” said Abir Mehanna. “We love the idea of healthy dessert, combined with great organic coffee choices and a fun atmosphere. We can’t wait to bring the Yogurtopia experience to our own community.”

Classes, school groups and teams are encouraged to attend the grand opening. When they do, and take a group photo, tag it with #WelcometToYogurtopia, and upload it to Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, they’ll be entered to win free frozen yogurt for a whole year. Details will be posted at the event, and the winner will be chosen the day following the event.
