MICHIGAN — A powerful winter storm making its way through the upper Midwest blasted Michigan on Thursday with high winds, leaving more than 30,000 people across the state without power. Most of the power outages stretched from the middle to upper Peninsula.
Over 8,000 DTE customers in the Metro Detroit area were also in the dark as high winds and rain moved through the area Thursday morning. The largest outages in the metro area were in the Hamtramck and Sterling Heights areas.
The massive storm system has pounded parts of the Midwest with up to 24 inches of snow and brought heavy rain and tornados to parts of the south. The storm was expected to make its way up the eastern coast, hitting areas in the east with more rain and snow, according to meteorologists.
