DETROIT — Officials with the Michigan Humane Society rescued a frightened cat along the Lodge Freeway in Detroit, the organization said Tuesday.

Drivers called the humane society and reported the orange male cat was curled up along the shoulder of the freeway.

Officials arrived and used a net to safely capture the animal and take it to the shelter for care and attention.

"Highway rescues like this are incredibly dangerous for both animals and drivers, which is why we always encourage the public to call trained professionals or local authorities rather than attempting roadside rescues themselves," officials said.

Officials decided to name the cat Lightning McQueen, a reference tied to the fictional racecar character in the Disney/Pixar Cars animated series.

"Now appropriately named Lightning McQueen because honestly, is there a more orange cat name than that," officials said.
