DETROIT — A man was killed and a child was injured in a Detroit shooting Wednesday night, according to police.
The shooting happened at 9:40 p.m. near Burgess Street and Eaton Avenue on the city's west side, according to police.
Detroit police Deputy Chief Tiffany Stewart told reporters that officers responded to the area after receiving 18 ShotSpotter alerts.
When officers arrived, Stewart said they found the man shot to death at the scene. He was not identified.
The 7-year-old child was found alone a few hundred yards away suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in his stomach and leg, Stewart said.
The child was taken to a nearby hospital where he was listed in critical condition, Stewart said.
It was unclear if the child or the man were together, or if there is any relationship between the two, Stewart said.
Investigators are searching for the child's family.
It was unclear what led up to the shooting. Investigators did find several rounds fired from a high-caliber gun at the scene.
Stewart said the shooting happened on a very vacant block, where most of the houses are unoccupied. She added there were no 911 calls.
No other details were released.
Police do not have any information on a suspected shooter. They ask anyone with information to call the Detroit police homicide unit at 313-596-2260, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP or 911.
