DETROIT — Steve Yzerman will no longer serve as the executive vice president and general manager of the Detroit Red Wings, the team announced Wednesday.
Instead, Yzerman will move into a senior advisor role to Governor and CEO Chris Ilitch.
The Red Wings will consider both internal and external candidates in their search for a new general manager.
In the meantime, the team said Yzerman will continue to manage the day-to-day of hockey operations.
"My commitment to the Red Wings and this community will never waver, and I look forward to supporting the organization in whatever role is needed to achieve our collective goals," Yzerman said.
The shakeup comes after the Red Wings missed the playoffs for the tenth consecutive year, seven of which were under Yzerman.
It also comes as Red Wings star forward Dylan Larkin has asked to be traded from the team. He gave the organization a list of teams he wants to be traded to. He has a full no-trade clause in his eight-year, $69.6 million contract, which he signed in 2023.
"Clearly, we are not where we and our fans expect to be as an organization" Ilitch said. "I'm looking forward to bringing in new leadership to build the championship-caliber organization Hockeytown deserves."
Yzerman's record with the Red Wings in seven years as general manager was 224-251-62 with zero playoff appearances.
As a player with the Red Wings, his Hockey Hall of Fame career included 692 goals, 1,755 points and three Stanley Cups.
After retiring in 2006, Yzerman became Red Wings Vice President of Hockey Operations (2006-10) before taking on the general manager role for the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2010-2019. He returned to the Red Wings in 2019, serving as the eleventh general manager in team history.
