DETROIT — A mother and her 7-year-old daughter are recovering after they were shot during an argument Monday night in Detroit, according to police.
The shooting happened at 7 p.m. at an apartment complex on Farnsworth Street near Gratiot and E. Warren avenues, according to police.
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison told reporters the argument stemmed from a fight earlier in the day among multiple children between 7 and 8 years old.
After the fight, Bettison said a father of one of the children confronted another child's mother at the arpartment.
The 29-year-old woman tried closing her door, but the man forced his way into the home and fired a shot, striking the woman and her daughter, Bettison said.
Bettison said the woman was struck in the arm. The bullet went through her arm and also hit her 7-year-old daughter in the shoulder, he said.
The woman and her daughter were taken to a nearby hospital where they were stable and expected to be ok, Bettison said.
Bettison did not provide a description of the shooter, but said he fled the scene in a white GMC Terrain.
Investigators said the man is known in the area and encouraged him to turn himself in.
"As adults, we cannot get involved if it's somebody that actually travel, knock on the door, confront a mom, pull out a gun, fire a shot now shooting the mother and the same bullet shoots child. It's senseless," Bettison said.
Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield also called the shooting a senseless act of violence.
"By the grace of God, both should recover from their physical injuries, but the emotional scars and trauma won't be easy to overcome," Sheffield said. "The individual responsible for their unspeakable act will be apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
Police ask anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
