DETROIT — Michigan U.S. Senate candidates Republican Mike Rogers and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed will debate Wednesday night in Detroit.
WXYZ (channel 7) and WXMI (Channel 17) will air the debate live from Broadcast House in Detroit, starting at 7 p.m. News anchors Carolyn Clifford and Alicia Smith will moderate the debate.
This will be the two candidates' final debate before the Nov. 3 general election. The two did debate earlier this month in Grand Rapids.
The seat is open because Democratic Senator Gary Peters decided not to seek a third term. Democrats have the seat since Carl Levin defeated Republican Senator Robert Griffin in 1978. Levin served for 36 years before Peters succeeded him in 2015.
The race is expected to be among the most competitive contests across the nation, and it could determine which party controls the U.S. going forward.
El-Sayed cited his campaign as a grassroots program, which largely focuses on Medicare for all, affordable housing and worker bargaining rights.
Rogers has talked about lowering costs for Michiganders and bringing manufacturing jobs to America. He also draws on his experience as a former Army service member, FBI special agent and House Intelligence Committee chairman to strengthen national security, border security and fighting crime.
