Hannan Center is accepting nominations for its 2026 70 Over Seventy Awards, which recognize 70 Michiganders age 70 and older for leadership, creativity and community impact.  

Nominations are open through July 6, 2026, and must be submitted online at www.hannan.org. 
Eligible nominees must be at least 70 years old at the time of nomination. Awards will be presented in seven categories: Lifetime Achievement, Art, Changemaker, Civic and Community Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Lifelong Learning and Unsung Hero. 

Honorees will be celebrated at the 2026 70 Over Seventy Awards Brunch on Saturday, October 3, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the International Business Center at the Atheneum Hotel in Detroit

As we reflect on 250 years of America's history, we invite you to join us for an impactful and important conversation with historian and author John Garrison Marks.
Marks will discuss his newest work, Thy Will Be Done: George Washington's Legacy of Slavery and the Fight for American Memory (2026), where he tells the story of Americans' long, fraught struggle to come to terms with Washington's legacy of slavery.
The program will lead with a question Americans have reflected on for nearly 250 years: How should we remember George Washington's entanglement in slavery?
Using research foundational to Thy Will Be Done, Marks will speak to Washington's ties to slavery, and how the actions seen in his life's work have shaped and reshaped Americans' collective memory of Washington and slavery — along with their understanding of the nation.
The program will include a discussion with Heather Bruegl (Oneida/Stockbridge-Munsee), Curator of Political and Civic Engagement at The Henry Ford, and be followed by a brief audience Q&amp;A and book signing, with the opportunity to purchase a copy of Thy Will Be Done.

Urban Solutions Training and Development Corp., a Detroit-based nonprofit providing mentorship, wellness and education programs for young women and seniors, will host the LOVE Gala on Wednesday, May 13 from 7–10 p.m.&nbsp; 
The black-tie fundraiser honors Stevie Wonder on his birthday and celebrates the 10th anniversary of Stevie Wonder Avenue. The gala caps a full day of free citywide events, including a mayoral proclamation at 10 a.m. and a community walk at 12 p.m. The public is invited to attend.&nbsp; 
The evening will feature performances by Alise King and Lisa McCall, former choreographer for Aretha Franklin, along with tributes from Dr. Sharon DuMas, Joan Belgrave and Motown arranger Paul Riser. The inaugural Love Awards will recognize Sharlonda Buckman-Davis, Andrea Thomas, Karra Thomas, Gail Perry-Mason and Shadora Ford for their impact in the community. 
General admission tickets start at $75 and include event access, entertainment and a commemorative book. VIP tickets start at $200 and include a seated dinner, private reception and meet-and-greet beginning at 6 p.m. 
Proceeds from the event will support USTAD’s new initiative, the Wonder Peace Ambassadors, which provides training on assessing and addressing mental health concerns among adolescents. USTAD’s programming includes mentorship, wellness and education programs serving young women and seniors across Detroit.&nbsp;
