Macomb County has reported 2,159 cases and 100 deaths.
Today's update comes after Whitmer said the three largest health systems in southeast Michigan — Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit Medical Center and Beaumont — were "dangerously low" on personal protective equipment.
Roughly 80 percent of the state's cases belong to Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties, the governor said Monday. Whitmer recognized organizations such as FEMA for assisting with southeast Michigan in particular; Whitmer said she expects FEMA to be donating 1.1 million surgical masks, 300 ventilators, 2 million gloves and 232,000 face shields to area hospitals.
Beaumont in particular has reported more than 1,000 confirmed coronavirus patients across its area hospitals. The hospital's CEO, John Fox, announced Sunday that the hospital will begin providing daily updates on numbers, and urged other facilities across the state to do the same.
The state also saw another Detroit-area lawmaker test positive for the coronavirus. The Detroit News reported Monday that Rep. Karen Whitsett tested positive for the illness. Whitsett is the second working Detroit area lawmaker to test positive for the virus.
In another step to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the governor also announced that she plans to extend the statewide stay-at-home order sometime within the next week. The length of that extension was not announced.
