Detroit Could Get New Area Code As '313' Numbers Run Low
State officials believe all 313 phone numbers covering Detroit and its neighbors will be exhausted by the third quarter of 2025.
DETROIT — There's nothing more synonymous to Detroit than its 313 area code. It's everywhere, on tattoos, t-shirts, hats, bags, and other merchandise. The number combination is a symbol of Detroit pride.
But that may soon change because the city and some of its surrounding communities are starting to run out of number combinations associated with the famous area code, according to the Michigan Public Commission.
Officials believe all 313 phone numbers will be exhausted by the third quarter of 2025. The commission proposed adding a new 679 area code as an overlay to Detroit and its neighboring cities.

Areas that would see the new area code include, Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Allen Park, Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Ecorse, the Grosse Pointes, Inkster, Lincoln Park, Redford Township, River Rouge and Taylor.
