Detroit Lions Signing QB Nate Sudfeld To Backup Jared Goff: Report
The Sudfeld signing comes as the Lions cut both backup quarterbacks after disappointing performances in the teams preseason finale.

DETROIT — The Detroit Lions are signing quarterback Nate Sudfeld to back up Jared Goff after cutting Tim Boyle and David Blough, multiple sources said.
The Lions claimed Sudfeld, 28, on waivers after he was cut earlier this week by the San Francisco 49ers when they extended quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
Sudfeld began his career in Washington as a sixth-round pick in 2016. He did not play his rookie year and was eventually cut by Washington in 2016. He was then signed by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017 and played in four games over three years with the Eagles. He completed 25 of 37 passes for 188 yards with one touchdown and one interception during that stretch.

The Lions cut Boyle and Blough after disappointing performances in the team's last preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. After the game, Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell said he got "clarity" on the team's backup quarterback situation.
"I think it's what anybody would think for the position, and is it somebody we know can come in and, if something happens, you know, that they can steer the ship and they can sustain and win some games?" Campbell said. "If you lose your starter for two or three games, can they win those games for you is what you've got to decide. So that's what we're wrestling with."
