Final Detroit Primary Election Results, Aug. 8, 2017: Duggan, Young Advance To Nov. 7 Vote

Detroit voters will narrow the field for mayor, city clerk and city council in the Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017, primary election.

DETROIT, MI — Incumbent Mayor Mike Duggan and challenger state Sen. Coleman A. Young II are headed for a showdown in the Nov. 7 general election. Eight people campaigned in Tuesday's primary, and Duggan and Young were the only ones who managed more than 1 percent.

Half of the mayoral candidates have felony records, including political newcomer Donna Marie Pitts, 58, who has an extensive felony record, including getting in a shootout over a car repair bill. She collected about 1 percent of the vote.

According to an analysis by The Detroit News, other mayoral candidates with felony convictions are Danetta L. Simpson, who was convicted of assault with intent to commit murder in 1996; Articia Bomer, who was convicted of a concealed weapon charge in 2008; and Curtis Christopher Greene, who was 19 in 2004 when he was charged with delivering and manufacturing marijuana and fleeing and eluding police during a chase.
Of the four, Pitts has the most detailed rap sheet with crimes in both Oakland and Wayne counties, The Detroit News said. In the 1987 shootout over the car repair bill, a jury convicted Pitts of a lesser offense of assault with intent to do great bodily harm, less than murder, and a firearms offense. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison and paroled in June 992, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections. Her most recent conviction was in 2003, when she pleaded guilty in Wayne County Circuit Court to carrying a concealed weapon.

The top two vote getters in each race will advance to the Nov. 7 election. Two at-large Detroit City Council positions are open, and the top four candidates in those races will advance. The District 5 City Council race doesn’t appear on the ballot because only two candidates — incumbent Mary Sheffield and Wayne County Commissioner Jewel Ware — filed to fill the seat.
