Driver Arrested After Critically Injuring 2 Young Girls On Belle Isle: Officials

Police said the driver struck the two young girls on a Belle Isle beach after leaving the roadway Monday night.

DETROIT — A Ypsilanti driver was arrested after police said he struck two young girls Monday night on Belle Isle and drove away.

Both girls, ages 12 and 14, were taken to a nearby hospital and listed in critical condition as of Tuesday morning, officials said.

A preliminary investigation showed the 23-year-old man was driving a four-door Mercury sedan when he left Riverbank Drive and onto the beach, striking the two girls at 8:15 p.m., officials said.

The driver never stopped and fled the scene, officials said.
