Explosion At General Motors Plant Injures Workers: Report

Breaking news: Paramedics are on the scene at the General Motors Detroit-Hamtramck plant after an explosion, according to reports.

DETROIT, MI — Paramedics are on the scene and treating several workers at the General Motors Detroit-Hamtramck plant after an explosion Wednesday morning, according to reports.

It’s unclear what caused the explosion at the Hamtramck assembly plant on East Grand Boulevard shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday, the Detroit Free Press reported. General Motors confirmed a situation had occurred, but did not elaborate.

“Emergency personnel are at the scene,” GM spokesman Tom Wickham told the Free Press “Our first priority is to check on the safety of all of our employees.”

Three people were injured, but none of the injuries is believed to be life-threatening, WWJ Radio reported. The explosion occurred in the paint shop. As employees added pressure to a valve, the lid popped off and struck the workers.

The plant wasn't evacuated and work is continuing, WWJ reported.

Detroit Deputy Fire Commissioner Dave Fornell said the explosion was minor and "not as disaster," The Detroit News reported.
