Man Ran Out of Gas on I-696, Killed By Driver

A man refilling his tank with gas was killed by a passing driver on I-696 Tuesday afternoon.

DETROIT, MI — Michigan State Police are investigating a fatal accident that closed down all three lanes of westbound I-696 at Dequindre Road for several hours Tuesday afternoon. According to police, a driver ran out of gas and was parked on the right shoulder, refilling his tank, when he was struck by a car and killed.

The man’s father had brought him gas and was parked near him, police said. The passing driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle and struck both cars parked on the shoulder. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and the suspected driver is being treated for minor injuries. Police believe speed was a factor in the crash.
