Today, the American Lung Association in Michigan announced a free mixer on Thursday, July 25 at Hazel, Ravines & Downtown for residents to network, learn about local Lung Association events, and hear about statewide efforts to end lung cancer and lung disease.

The event will also serve as a kickoff celebration for the upcoming Detroit LUNG FORCE Walk, happening on September 29 at the Detroit Zoo. The LUNG FORCE Walk is a unique and festive fundraising event that brings people together to raise awareness, and funds to fight lung cancer and lung disease.

“The more money that is raised for research, the quicker they can find a cure or at the very least better treatment options for lung cancer. I am proof that anyone can get lung cancer,” said Debbie Pickworth, lung cancer survivor and LUNG FORCE Walk event chair. “The fact that lung cancer is the number one leading cause of cancer deaths world-wide is enough to take notice. More than 200,000 people will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year and 160,000 people will die. It is that simple. It is that scary. We can all make a difference. Just raise your voice. Donate, walk, run or ride. Just stand up and be heard and they will find a cure.”

Here in Michigan, there are more than 1.5 million residents who live with lung disease, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer and other lung diseases. Events like the LUNG FORCE Walk raise awareness for lung disease, raise money for life-saving research, and fund critical local programing like classes to help local children better manage their asthma and efforts to help residents quit smoking.

The mixer and LUNG FORCE Walk kickoff celebration is on Thursday, July 25 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Hazel, Ravines & Downtown (34977 Woodward Ave. Birmingham, MI 48009). The event is free and open to the public. Appetizers and refreshments will be served. RSVP is preferred, but not required. You can RSVP by emailing EventsMI@Lung.org or by calling 248-784-2000.
