Detroit Area Pizzeria Makes New York Times 'Best Pizza Places' List

The pizzeria uses a unique set of ingredients to make what are known as "Bangladeshi pizzas​."

HAMTRAMCK, MI — A Hamtramck pizzeria that uses a unique set of ingredients is among the 22 best places in the nation to get pizza, according to the New York Times.

Amar Pizza, located at 12195 Joseph Campau Ave., is best-known for using Bangladeshi ingredients on its pizzas.

"We’re in a neighborhood where there are pizzerias that had been around 20 to 30 years," Amar’s owner Khurshed Ahmed told the outlet. "We had to come up with something unique, to separate us."

Ahmed also told the Times the pizzeria uses dried fish paste and Naga chiles as ingredients for its pizzas, known as "Bangladeshi pizzas."

Other menu items include a dry Fish pizza, which features dried shrimp, roasted garlic, mozzarella and provolone cheese blend, onions and cilantro with spicy fish paste sauce.

The Naga pizza is made with chicken, red onions, cilantro and naga sauce. Amar also offers Ghost Pepper pizza, which is a spicy pizza with chicken, red onions, cilantro and ghost sauce.

Amar Pizza opened mostly as a takeout place in 2010, according to the Times.

There's also a location at 3728 Rochester Rd. in Troy.
