Sevilla FC​ Defeats Crystal Palace In Detroit Before 21K Fans

DETROIT — More than 21,000 spectators watched La Liga’s Sevilla FC defeat the English Premier League club Crystal Palace Sunday night at Comerica Park, in Detroit's first international soccer match in the last six years.

The exhibition match ended in sudden-death penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 draw. Sevilla's Ivan Rakitic scored the team's first shot in penalty kicks, while Crystal Palace's Joachim Andersen's shot hit the crossbar and bounced out.

Rakitic also scored Sevilla's only regulation goal in the 44th minute. Eberechi Eze even the score for Crystal Palace in the 74th minute.

The last international soccer match played in Detroit was in 2017 when French League powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain defeated Italian Serie A side AS Roma in front of 36,000 fans at Comerica Park.
