Lyft Driver Charged In Deadly Detroit Crash: Prosecutor

Prosecutors said the man was driving recklessly and speeding when he lost control and crashed into a building along Rosa Parks Boulevard.

DETROIT — A Lyft driver has been charged with murder in connection with a high-speed crash that left two passengers dead in Detroit, according to prosecutors.

Andre Boynton, 60, and Carla Boynton, 57, both from North Carolina, were killed in the crash that happened at 10:15 a.m. Sunday in the 6000 block of Rosa Parks Boulevard, according to prosecutors.

Theopris Mays, 40, of Herndon, Virginia, was charged with two counts of second-degree murder, reckless driving causing death and leaving the scene of an at-fault accident causing death.

He was placed in jail with a $500,000 bond. His next court date is scheduled for Friday.

If convicted, he faces up to life in prison for the murder charges, up to 15 years for reckless driving and causing death and up to 15 years for leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

Prosecutors said Mays, a Lyft rideshare driver, was driving recklessly and speeding when he lost control and crashed into the building along Rosa Parks Boulevard.

Mays ran away from the scene after the crash, but prosecutors said he was quickly arrested. He was also taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

He had picked up the couple from a hotel on Mercury Drive on Sunday morning to bring them to a religious event at Huntington Place, according to a Fox 2 Detroit report.
