Man Charged in Wayne State Officer's Murder Eliminated as Suspect: Updated

DeAngelo Lamar Dvis "vilified ... by both the national and local media" after he was accused of shooting officer, attorney says.

Updated. DETROIT, MI — As expected, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Wednesday that murder and other charges would be dropped against DeAngelo Lamar Davis, the 31-year-old Detroit man who had been charged in the shooting death of a Wayne State University police office last month.

Collin Rose, who was posthumously promoted to sergeant, died Nov. 23 after he was shot in the head while conducting a traffic investigation of a male riding a bicycle in the area of Lincoln and Brainard in Detroit. Davis was arrested Nov 22, but Worthy said Wednesday that a subsequent investigation reveals that he was not the shooter.

Davis, who has been held without bond since Nov. 22, will be released from custody Wednesday.

“After a review of new evidence, prosecutors and the police have determined that DeAngelo Davis is not a suspect in the death of Sgt. Collin Rose,” Worthy said in a statement. “Mr. Davis will have all charges dismissed against him and today he will be released from custody.”

Davis' attorney, Nicole James, said her client has been "vilified and his reputation sullied by both the national and local media."

"The murder of Sgt. Rose was a tragic loss to the community and law enforcement, but it was also wrong to snatch Mr. DeAngelo Davis off the street and try this case in the media despite a lack of evidence connecting him to the crime," James told the Detroit Fre Press. "The rush to judgment by the Detroit Police Department, Wayne State Public Safety and the Prosecutor's Office resulted in Mr. Davis being vilified and his reputation sullied by both the national and local media."

The Homicide Task Force, comprised of the Detroit Police Department and the Michigan State Police, “continues to aggressively commit their time and resources to investigate the death of Sgt. Rose,” Worthy said. “For this reason, we are not at liberty to provide further details about the dismissed case and the ongoing investigation.”

A reward of $15,000 is offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the responsible party, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said in a news conference.

Patch's earlier story: Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy is expected to announce Wednesday that murder and other charges against a Detroit man accused of fatally shooting a Wayne State University will be dismissed because new evidence points to another individual as the shooter, according to reports.

DeAngelo Lamar Davis, 31, of Detroit, is being held without bond on first-degree murder and other felony charges after an intense manhunt after the officer, Sgt. Collin Rose, was shot in the head. Rose died of his injuries on Wednesday, Nov. 23.

Worthy said in a statement Tuesday that a news conference would be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday to discuss the charges, but offered no additional information. Detroit Police Chief James Craig and Wayne State University Police Chief Anthony Holt are expected to take questions.

The Detroit News reported that police sources said that Davis is in the clear for Rose’s murder and that another individual was responsible.
