Metro Detroit Bakery Picked As Best Pastry Shop In The Midwest

METRO DETROIT — A popular magazine picked a metro Detroit bakery as the best pastry shop in the Midwest.

Cannelle Patisserie, a French pastry shop, won best bakery in the Midwest in Midwest Living's Best of the Midwest Awards Winners for 2023.

Cannelle Patisserie has locations in Ann Arbor, Birmingham and Detroit, and is planning to open a fourth location in downtown Farmington. The pastry shop is known for serving French pastries, such as croissants, macarons, fruit tarts, as well as other specialty treats.

The bakery's owner, Chef Matt Knio, found his love for baking in Ivory Coast, Africa, where he worked on a cocoa bean plantation. He closely with farmers in the area before moving to Paris, where he learned under a master chef.

Knio then decided to bring his talents to Detroit, where he said the city's diversity and acceptance of new and different talents made it feel like home.

"Knio has wowed metro Detroit with his breads, cakes and French pastries for 20 years," the magazine said. "And it's not just the harmony of textures and flavors— it's the artistry."
