Metro Detroit Primary Elections 2023 Guide: Key Races, Candidates

Voters in some areas across metro Detroit will determine candidates for upcoming mayoral and city council races in November.

METRO DETROIT — There are multiple primary elections Tuesday across metro Detroit that will help determine candidates for upcoming mayor and city council elections in November. Voters in some areas will also decide key proposals to help fund local districts.

Polls across the region open at 7 a.m. and will close at 8 p.m. for those looking to vote in-person. You can see your polling place on the state's voter information website.

Absent voter ballots must be returned to the clerk's office by 8 p.m. Tuesday. (Absentee ballots will not be counted unless the voter's signature is on the return envelope and matches your signature on file.)

Anyone looking to register to vote on Tuesday must do so in-person at your local clerk's office by 8 p.m. Anyone who needs help registering to vote can call the state department at 1-888-SOS-MICH (888-767-6424).

Here are some of metro Detroit's key races and proposals to watch for in Tuesday's primaries:

Berkley Bond Proposal

Voters will determine Tuesday a $88 million bond proposal that was approved by the Berkley Schools Board of Education in April.

Dearborn Heights City Council

Eight candidates are running for three Dearborn Heights City Council seats in November. The top six vote getters in Tuesday's election will move onto the November ballot.

The candidates running are Mo Baydoun, Ray Muscat, Zouher Abdel-Hak, Ahmad Alkaabi, Wissam Fadlallah, Hussein Mazloum, Denise Malinowski-Maxwell and Hassan Saab.

Grosse Pointe Park City Council

Seven candidates are running for six openings on the Grosse Pointe Park City Council in November. The top six vote getters will make their way onto the November ballot.

The candidates running are Brent Dreaver, Jay A. Kennedy, Timothy Kolar, Marty McMillan (Incumbent), Kirk Merametdjian, Elvis Torres and Heather Ulku.

Westland Mayor

Six candidates are running to be the next mayor of Westland. The top two-vote getters in the primary will move on to the November general election. The mayor is a nonpartisan, four-year position.

The candidates running are, Mike Londeau (Interim mayor), Kevin Coleman (State Rep. D-Westland), Jim Godbout (Westland City Council member), Ali Awadi, Anthony Jones and Ronald Sassak.
