Michigan Now Has Over 25,000 Coronavirus Cases, 1,600 Deaths

Michigan has now reported more than 25,000 cases of the coronavirus and more than 1,600 deaths.

MICHIGAN — There are now more than 25,000 reported cases of the coronavirus in Michigan and over 1,600 deaths attributed to it, state health officials said Monday.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Monday reported 25,656 total cases and 1,602 deaths, with an additional 997 cases and 115 deaths. The updated numbers are as of 10 a.m. Monday and were released by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in an afternoon address to residents.

There have been fewer than 1,000 new cases reported in Michigan in back-to-back days, coming after the state Friday reported the largest single-day increase in new cases.

Whitmer said social distancing and the stay-at-home order had been having an effect on flattening the curve in numbers of cases. Health officials reported that the state had seen improvements in southeast Michigan, where the majority of cases have been reported, while other areas, such as Genesee County, have begun seeing a significant uptick in cases.

"We will get past this; we will get through this. This is not a permanent moment," she said.

Detroit leads Michigan in total number of coronavirus cases. The updated numbers reflect Detroit having more than 6,700 cases and 395 deaths — both highs among Michigan communities.

Wayne County, which reports separately from Detroit, reported nearly 4,900 cases of the virus. Wayne County leads Michigan counties in reported deaths attributed to the coronavirus, with 365 total reported.

There have been a total of 5,073 coronavirus cases reported in Oakland County, along with 347 reported deaths.

Macomb County has reported over 3,400 cases and 240 deaths.

More than 1.9 million cases of the new coronavirus have been reported across the globe, along with more than 118,800 deaths. The United States leads the world in total coronavirus cases, reporting more than 577,000 confirmed cases and more than 23,000 deaths.

The most recent number show Michigan as the No. 3 state in terms of reported coronavirus cases in the nation; however, Massachusetts has made a significant climb, also reporting more than 25,000 cases.
