Michigan State Fair Shooting Victim Identified As Oakland Co. Student

The 14-year-old was shot and killed in the parking lot outside the fair in Novi, according to police.

NOVI, MI — The teen who died after he was shot at the Michigan State Fair Saturday night has been identified as 14-year-old Darean Davis of Detroit, according to news reports.

Davis, a sophomore at University High School in Ferndale, and another 14-year-old were shot at 10 p.m. Saturday southwest of the Suburban Collection Showplace in a parking lot near Grand River Avenue, according to police.

The teens were taken to a nearby hospital where Davis died, while the other victim was in stable condition, according to police.

"We want somebody to speak up because there was a lot of people there, and from my understanding, people were recording, so somebody knows something," Darean's mother, Verteya Gilbert, told CBS Detroit. "It's not going to bring my son back, but it will bring me just a little bit of comfort."

Police said the teens took an Uber from Detroit to Farmington Hills and then another to the fair, where they started arguing with another group of mostly teens. Investigators believe the groups had been arguing throughout the week.

The shouting match turned physical in the parking lot where a shooter opened fire, striking the victims, according to police.

The shooter, whom police have not yet identified, left the parking lot in a scene of chaos, according to police.

Video posted to social media showed people running away from the fair in droves. Investigators are planning to use video footage to try and identify the shooter.

Grief counselors will be available at Ferndale Public Schools Tuesday for students, staff and parents, according to a letter from school officials.

"Thank you for your understanding, compassion, and support as we navigate this difficult period. Let us come together as a community to support one another and honor Darean's memory," officials said in the letter.

Police are still investigating the shooting and asked anyone with information to call the Novi Police Department at 248-348-7100.
