New Service Eliminates Need for New Year’s Designated Driver

DriverOnTap provides a chauffeur to get you and your car home safely if you drink too much.

DETROIT, MI — So, you’re out whooping it up on New Year’s Eve and you forgot to designate a driver — or the driver you designated forgot not to drink. You could call a taxi or Uber cab, but then your car is stuck where you left it and your hungover self will have to go retrieve it on New Year’s Day.

Good news, partiers: A new driver service has been expanded throughout Michigan to help New Year’s revelers get home from their party spots responsibly. DriverOnTap was founded in the Lansing area and has been operational for more than a year.

The service operates differently than taxis and ride-share services such as Uber. DriverOnTap provides a chauffeur to drive clients home from restaurants, bars, friends’ homes and other party spots. Clients can drive their own cars to parties, then summon the chauffeur to get them home safely rather than risk an accident or

“We want people to celebrate and enjoy the holidays, but we also want them and others on the road to be safe,” Jose Ramirez, DriverOnTap chairman, said in a news release. “If someone has consumed alcohol, DriverOnTap is a safe and convenient alternative to driving impaired.”



Drivers are professional, licensed and insured, Ramirez added.

Reservations for drivers are made using the DriverOnTap app — for Apple and Android devices — up to six hours in advance. The app can be downloaded at www.DriverOnTap.com. Before clients confirm the reservation, they will know who their driver is, the time of pick up and the cost.

Though developed in Lansing, the service is now headquartered in the Renaissance Center in Detroit. The service is available year-round, 24 hours a day
