Partially-Collapsed Eastern Market Building Will Be Demolished

One person was injured in the sudden collapse Saturday morning and was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, officials said.

DETROIT — A building that partially collapsed Saturday in Detroit's Eastern Market neighborhood was ordered to be torn down, according to city officials.

The top two floors of the Del Bene building, located at 2501 Russell Street on the corner of Winder and Russell in Detroit, suddenly collapsed at bout 11:38 a.m. Saturday.

One person was injured in the collapse and was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, officials said.

There were numerous businesses inside the building, including Jabs Gym, Beyond Juicery & Eatery, and a Detroit vs. Everybody storefront, according to the Eastern Market Directory. All the stores are now forced to relocate.

Officials were still working to determine what caused the top two floors to suddenly collapse.

A date to demolish the building was not immediately set, but the building was placed on lockdown and no one is allowed to enter the structure in the meantime.
