President named for Michigan Market Ascension Medical Group

Dr. Kenneth E. Berkovitz to join the Ascension Michigan executive team as president of the Michigan Market Ascension Medical

Ascension Michigan is pleased to announce that Kenneth E. Berkovitz, MD, FACC, will join the Ascension Michigan executive team Aug. 6 as president of the Michigan Market Ascension Medical Group (AMG). This newly created position fills a significant need within our market to align our local AMG entities and develop a statewide business and operational strategy.

Dr. Berkovitz will represent Ascension Michigan nationally, as part of AMG. Spanning 16 states, including the District of Columbia, Ascension Medical Group is one of the largest healthcare provider networks in the United States. AMG is dedicated to advancing the Quadruple Aim of delivering exceptional health outcomes, an exceptional experience for the people we serve, and an exceptional experience for providers, at an affordable cost.

Dr. Berkovitz currently serves as chief executive officer of the Cardiovascular Institute at OSF Healthcare System in Peoria, Illinois. Previously he served as president of the Summa Health System Cardiovascular Institute in Akron, Ohio. A board-certified cardiologist and diplomate in interventional cardiology, Dr. Berkovitz received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

“We believe that our physician network is the essential foundation of our growth strategy across Ascension,” said Joseph Cacchione, MD, President, Ascension Medical Group and Interim Market Executive, Ascension Michigan. “The time is right to use our statewide footprint to bring new populations into our system of care. Dr. Berkovitz will be a strong leader in that effort.”

Dr. Berkovitz will work closely with the dyad leadership teams of the AMG business entities in southeast Michigan, Mid-Michigan and western Michigan to create a cohesive clinical network poised to grow and flourish across the state. Their leadership continues to be critical in connecting local primary care physicians and specialists with our unified strategy. There are approximately 1,100 employed providers within the Ascension Michigan market. In Fiscal Year 2018, they logged 2.57 million patient visits and $654 million in revenue.
