Severe Thunderstorms Could Hit Detroit Area Tuesday: MI Weather

Forecasters warned the storms will be capable of heavy downpours, pea size hail and strong wind gusts reaching up to 40 miles per hour.

SOUTHEASTERN MICHIGAN — Severe thunderstorms can hit southeastern Michigan on Tuesday as part of a larger weather system moving across the Midwest and Ohio Valley, according to the National Weather Service.

The thunderstorms are expected to roll into southeastern Michigan during the afternoon and evening hours Tuesday when high temperatures reach 50 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters warned the storms will be capable of heavy downpours, pea size hail and strong wind gusts reaching up to 40 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service.

Areas in Monroe and Lenawee counties, especially toward the Ohio border, are at the greatest risk for severe weather Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Thunderstorms are also expected Tuesday afternoon and evening across western Michigan, but forecasters do not expect any severe weather with those storms, according to the National Weather Service.

While rain and thunderstorms are expected in the lower half of Michigan, forecasters expect heavy snow in parts of the Upper Peninsula and northern Michigan throughout Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Parts of the eastern half of the Upper Peninsula can see between 5 and 8 inches of fresh snow, while areas in northern Michigan should see roughly 2 to 4 inches of fresh snow by Tuesday night, according to the National Weather Service.
