McKinney Unseats Thanedar In Race For MI's 13th Congressional District: AP

State Rep. Donavan McKinney defeated U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar in Michigan's Democratic Primary for the state's 13th Congressional District, according to the Associated Press.

The AP called the race Wednesday morning with McKinney ahead by more than 4,000 votes with 99 percent of the vote counted, according to unofficial results.

He will face Republican Taras Nykoriak, who ran unopposed for the Republican nomination.

The district, which Thanedar served since 2022, includes Detroit, Grosse Pointe and multiple downriver communities.

McKinney was widely seen as a progressive alternative to Thanedar.

McKinney has focused on voting rights, campaign finance and assistance for working families. He was also endorsed by Pennsylvania's U.S. Rep. Summer Lee, who is seen as a prominent progressive.

Precincts reporting - 99 percent

Thanedar served as the ranking member of the House Committee on Homeland Security's Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability.

He was backed by House Democratic Leaders Hakeem Jeffries, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark and House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete.

He was first elected to Congress in 2022, when he defeated Martell Bivings for the seat in 2022. That became the first time a district covering most of Detroit was without Black representation in Congress since 1955.
