Trey Songz Appears on Charges in Detroit Meltdown, Then Vanishes

R&b singer and rapper accused of punching Detroit police officer after an on-stage tantrum slipped in and out of courthouse without notice.

DETROIT, MI — Trey Songz, the r&b singer and rapper accused of punching a Detroit cop and giving him a concussion during a concert at the Joe Louis Arena last month, was in and out of court in less than five minutes Thursday, according to media reports. Songz, whose legal name is Tremaine Aldon Neverson, is charged with felony assault on a police officer, causing injury, and a misdemeanor charge of aggravated assault.

Songz, 32, appeared for his probable cause hearing on the second floor of the courthouse, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement. But the “Bottoms Up” singer was kept out of the spotlight of the media and fans hungry for a glimpse of the star, who threw a now-infamous tantrum during the fourth annual Big Show at the Joe on Dec. 28.

Songz is due back in court Feb. 10 for his preliminary examination. No changes were made in the Desputanta, Virginia, resident’s bond, which was set at $25,000/10 percent in his Dec. 29 arraignment. He spent most of that day in jail.

The Thursday hearing was scheduled for 8:30 a.m., but the media were kept downstairs until 8:25. When reporters were allowed in the courtroom, Songz was gone, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Judge Lydia nance Adams didn’t say why Songz’s hearing took place before its scheduled time, according to The Detroit News.

Fans who had staked out the courthouse were disappointed, too. At least one tweeted a near encounter with him, The Detroit News said. The Detroit Free Press said three SUVs were parked outside the courthouse, but no one saw the star leave.

Songz’s meltdown came at the end of the Big Show at the Joe concert, where he appeared with Chris Brown, Lil Yachty and others. Someone told him his time was up, and he unleashed a string of profanities and racial slurs before sending equipment airborne when his microphone was cut.

Police said he “became irate” and started throwing objects from the stage, including speakers, microphones and “anything he could get his hands on.”

When a police officer approached the artist to arrest him, Songz allegedly struck an officer with his fist, causing a concussion. The officer was treated and released from a local hospital

Songz, a contemporary R&B singer, songwriter and producer who debuted in 2005, has had five albums that have reached the Top 20 on the Billboard 200 chart, as well as 15 singles that hit the Top 10 of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart, according to Billboard. He has been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards. He is also an actor, and has appeared in prominent roles in the films “Texas Chainsaw 3D,” “Baggage Claim” and others, according to the Internet Movie Database.
