Highs temperatures in the metro Detroit area can break a record this weekend before more rain and snow moves into the area.

METRO DETROIT — Southerly winds will push warmer air into the metro Detroit area this weekend, possibly setting a record high, before more rain and snow moves into the region, according to the National Weather Service.

High temperatures in the metro area will reach the mid 50s Friday, as southwest winds with gusts reaching up to 24 miles per hour move into the area, according to the National Weather Service.

Overnight lows only dip into the upper 40s, before stronger southerly winds with gusts reaching up to 29 miles per hour blow into the area and push temperatures toward 60 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The record high for the Detroit area on Dec. 9 is 58 degrees.

Forecasters expect scattered rain showers to move into the metro area Saturday morning along with the southerly winds, before fizzling away sometime during the early afternoon hours, according to the National Weather Service.

A strong cold front then moves into the metro area Sunday, plunging high temperatures by nearly 20 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters expect scattered light rain and snow showers in the metro area throughout Sunday evening as lows fall into the upper 20s, according to the National Weather Service.

Saturday: Rain showers; High 58, Low 37

Sunday: Rain/Snow showers; High 42, Low 28
