Winter Storm Update As Snowfall Nears Peak In Metro Detroit

Metro Detroit will receive an additional 2 to 4 inches of snow during Wednesday's evening commute, the National Weather Service said.

METRO DETROIT — The National Weather Service warned peak snowfall will occur late Wednesday afternoon during the evening commute, in which the metro Detroit area will receive an additional 2 to 4 inches of snow, putting Wednesday's total between 5 and 8 inches of snow.

Heavier bands of snow north of Interstate 69 will begin to shift south toward metro Detroit, making for snowfall rates of up to 1 inch per hour between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. Wednesday. Additionally, the entire weather system is beginning to shift south, meaning higher snowfall amounts will accumulate the farther south you go toward the Michigan/Ohio border, the National Weather Service said.

However, metro Detroit remains under a winter storm warning until 10:00 p.m. Thursday and drivers can expect reduced visibility and slippery roads, especially during Wednesday's evening commute, the National Weather Service warned.

Michigan State Police said they were working multiple crashes across metro Detroit and urged drivers to use caution on the roads.

With the weather system shifting toward the southeast, the National Weather Service scaled back Thursday's snowfall estimates to 1 to 2 inches of new snow Thursday, and even that will mainly be in the metro's south zones. The north zone may miss out on any new Thursday snow entirely, the National Weather Service said.
