Woman Dead, Man Injured In Propane Heater Fire At Abandoned Detroit School: Reports

Investigators initially thought the two were electrocuted, but later learned there was a fire involving a propane heater.

DETROIT — A woman is dead and a man was injured after a fire involving a propane heater in Detroit, according to news reports.

Police said the incident happened around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at an abandoned school in the area of Brainard Street and 4th Avenue, near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and the Lodge Freeway.

Investigators initially thought the two were electrocuted while trying to steal electrical cables from inside the school. But they later learned there was a fire caused by a propane heater near a tent that was set up alongside the building.

The fire may have been caused by tampering with a utility connection at the vacant building, WDIV reports.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital with severe burns, but is expected to survive, according to police.

Police did not release the name of the woman who was killed in the incident.
