Woman Hit, Killed By Van Along Detroit Freeway: Police

Witnesses told officers the woman had jumped from an overpass over freeway before she was hit by the van, according to police.

DETROIT — A woman died Thursday morning after she was hit by a van along Interstate 96 in Detroit, according to Michigan State Police.

Witnesses told troopers the 39-year-old woman jumped from an overpass over the westbound lanes of the freeway, near Martin Luther King Boulevard at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, according to police.

She was then struck by a Ford van in the right lane of the freeway, according to police.

Officers found the woman dead at the scene, according to police.

Officials did not immediately identify the woman.

The driver of the van did stop at the scene of the crash and is cooperating with investigators, according to police.

Investigators were still waiting for a medical examiner report.

The westbound freeway was shut down near Michigan Avenue after the crash, but has since reopened to traffic.
