1. East Lansing Public Schools superintendent to retire at end of school year (wilx.com) — East Lansing families are being told that Public Schools Superintendent Dori Leyko plans to retire at the end of the 2026-27 school year, after a decade leading the district. She's pledged to stay fully engaged through August 13, 2027, and to help the school board manage a smooth transition to new leadership.
2. From Trader Joe's to Raising Canes. Why Lansing is now on the map for major chains (bnd.com) — National chains are increasingly targeting the Lansing region, with East Lansing landing Raising Cane's in 2022 and a new Sheetz planned near campus. Local experts say Whole Foods' success helped spark a wave of restaurants and retailers, bringing more shopping, dining, and jobs that East Lansing residents will notice along Saginaw, Michigan Avenue, and nearby commercial hubs.
3. ICYMI: DIGGING INTO INNOVATION: MSU Research Foundation breaks ground on $20M Rosenberg Center at Michigan State University (michiganbusinessnetwork.com) — A new $20 million Rosenberg Center is underway on Crescent Road in East Lansing, set to become headquarters for the MSU Research Foundation and a hub for startups and research partnerships. The 65,000-square-foot adaptive reuse project aims to strengthen the Spartan Village innovation district and boost Greater Lansing's role in tech commercialization and entrepreneurship.
4. NYT publisher A.G. Sulzberger: Journalism must evolve, not compromise (statenews.com) — Michigan State University hosted New York Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger at Wharton Center in East Lansing, where he argued journalism must adapt to the digital age without sacrificing independence. Speaking with MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz, he highlighted the Times' history of innovation, the importance of accountability reporting, and urged students to value free press and thoughtful leadership.
5. Emerging Opioid Cychlorphine Can Be Hidden in Other Drugs, MSU Warns (eastlansinginfo.news) — Michigan State University and local health officials are warning East Lansing-area residents about cychlorphine, a powerful emerging opioid that can be mixed into other drugs without users knowing. While no cychlorphine-related deaths have been confirmed yet in Michigan or mid-Michigan counties, agencies urge people who use drugs to carry naloxone, use test strips where possible, and avoid pills or powders not prescribed to them.
