SOUTHFIELD, MI — A driver who stopped alongside the Lodge Freeway to help others after a crash in Oakland County on Saturday was hit and killed by a car, according to Michigan State Police.
The initial crash happened at 11:39 p.m. Saturday on the freeway near Nine Mile Road in Southfield, according to police.
One of the vehicles involved in that crash became disabled and was blocking two lanes of traffic, according to police.
Moments later, police said a passing driver stopped along the right shoulder. They said the person walked across the freeway and reached those involved in the crash.
While the pedestrian was helping, another driver struck them while trying to swerve away from the disabled vehicle, according to police.
The pedestrian was killed in the crash, according to police.
The driver who hit the pedestrian stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, who do not suspect alcohol or drugs as factors in the crash, according to police.
Police did not release any details about the initial crash or if there were any injuries involved in that crash.
The freeway was shut down for hours after the crashes. It reopened around 4:30 a.m. Sunday.
Police did not release any other details as they were still investigating.
